Car Seat Safety

When you become a parent all you worry about is your kids. It’s so much fun to take your kids everywhere with you so they can learn about the world and gain life experiences they won’t forget. The best way to make sure your kids can go anywhere with you is to make sure they have the right car seat to get there safely! Children’s Car Seat Safety is so important and there are so many different types of car seats to begin with. For each age group, height, and weight there is a different car seat. If you’re a new parent, take notes, you’re going to need a few different car seats throughout the coming years.

There are four categories of car seats and each of them are for a different age group of kids. The categories are determined by age, height, and weight for safety purposes. The first type of car seat is the rear facing car seat. This is for infants that were just born and will work until the age of 4 years old. The one thing to know about this kind of car seat is that you should never place it in the front seat because of the passenger air bags. It’s really dangerous and could be fatal for kids to get hit by air bags.

The next type of car seat that you should put your kids in is the forward-facing car seat. This type of car seat has a harness and tether that limits the movement during a crash. After the rear-facing car seat this is the next step. This car seat will be used until the child turns 5 or grow out of the height and weight limit of the car seat. Many of these seats can accommodate children up to 65 lbs or more. There are 3 different types of front facing seats including: convertible seat, combination seat and All-in-one seat.

The next seat is a booster seat. The booster seat raises and positions a child so the vehicle’s lap-and-shoulder belt fits properly over the stronger points of a child’s body, the hips and across the chest. The booster seat is more for school aged children. Usually, kids are ready to get out of a booster seat when they reach 4 feet and 9 inches tall. The booster seat’s job will be done when kids are about 8-12 years old, but no later than 13 years old. As always, check the labels and user’s manual before determining if a child can fit into a booster seat.

Once a child is 13 and is the proper height and weight to wear a seatbelt safely without a booster seat, then they don’t need the booster seat anymore. Wearing a seatbelt should be comfortable for the child and not restraining too much. Children younger than 13 years of age should always sit in the backseat and not the front seat. It’s really important to note that you should not use a car seat ever if it is broken or cracked, or was ever in a severe car crash. Being safe means keeping the kids safe too. Knowing what type of car seat your child needs is the one way to keep them safe on car rides. Whatever type of car seat you need, L.A. Insurance has got you covered.
