How to Winterize Your Boat
As the weather gets colder, boating season is coming to an end. This unfortunate news comes with a lot of responsibility too. Winterizing your boat is an essential part of living in states like Michigan, that have really long and cold winters. Winterizing your boat means that you are preparing your boat for the incoming weather conditions. There are steps that you can take to winterize your own boat, and there are also places that you can take your boat to, if you don’t want to winterize the boat yourself.
Professionals recommend that you store your boat out of the water during winter to prevent such things as ice formation, corrosion, and damage to the boat plumbing. Whether you are storing your boat in the water or out of the water, the first step to winterizing your boat is to make sure that the engine oil is replaced, and all other engine functions are taken care of. This means that you should heat up the engine while it’s in the water and flush it all out then grease it with the proper oil. Change all engine oils and filters so that the engine doesn’t get damaged over winter.
Draining all of the water from your boat will ensure that during the off-season freeze damage is less likely to occur. Leaving water in your boat is more likely to cause mold and mildew which is not easy to get rid of, so all water should be drained and dried off the boat. The next step is to check on your fuel. After 60 days fuel can deteriorate and cause many issues for your engine including hard starting, bad performance and a reduced engine life. Adding a fuel-stabilizing additive to your fuel system and then adding antifreeze to your plumbing system is a must when trying to winterize your boat.
The last few things you should always do for your boat when winterizing it are oiling and greasing main components before storing it. This includes your gear oil, grease fittings, checking seals, and protecting against corrosion, oxidation, and rust. All of these main components that should be handled before storage, can be found in the owner’s manual of your boat. Finally, right before storage you should always clean and wax your boat before getting it covered.
Covering your boat can be done in a few different ways. One way includes shrink wrapping it to completely preserve it, and the other way is by storing it in dry storage. By storing it in dry storage you will not have to check up on the boat every few weeks and this avoids having unwanted creatures, like rats, living on the boat during cold weather. While your boat is in storage, it’s really important to have it insured in case of any emergencies that could occur.
