Whether you’re going on a road trip, taking an airplane, boat, or train, travelling can be dangerous in all of these situations. It’s good to be prepared and be aware of your surroundings at all times and have plans in place for what you’re doing and where you’re going. There are so many scams and petty thieves anywhere you go, it’s good to know what to look out for when you’re in places where this could happen. The first tip is to make sure that BEFORE you go, you share your travel plans and information with someone that you trust. Make sure all the addresses and phone numbers of the places you’re staying are included in the information you give your trustworthy friend or family member.
Another great tip is to make sure that before you go on your trip or vacation, to check out what the transportation is like in that place. You’re going to need to know what kind of transportation the safest, and which transportation might cause some trouble for you. Some criminals who like to prey on tourists pose as taxicab drivers or uber drivers and this could cause a problem for you on vacation. With that being said, make sure that you’re not in a remote area when waiting for transportation like busses or ride sharing so that you cannot be easily targeted. Speaking of remote, do not go to an ATM at night to avoid being robbed or mugged. If you’re going overseas, make sure to notify your credit card companies and bank so that you can have access to your money easily.
If you are flying to your destination, there are things to be wary of when you are at the airport. Always be sure to keep your luggage and other bags with you, in your sight, all the time. When travelling like this you should always keep copies of your important documents in 3 different places: one set with you, one set with a family member at home, and one set put away securely where you are staying. This is important so that you have proof of who you are if anything goes wrong, or you need to identify yourself officially. If you need any help with this while you’re in a different country, the best thing to do would be to contact the U.S. Embassy in that country.
Before travelling out of the country or even to other states, check online to see what’s going on there. Make sure it’s safe and check the travel advisory website if you’re going to different countries. The U.S. Department of State- Bureau of Consular Affairs has a very helpful website to get safety information on other countries that you could be traveling to. The website also has other helpful content for travel safety on the home page. L.A.
