Drunk Driving Accidents in Michigan 2024: A Comprehensive Analysis

Executive Summary

This report presents an in-depth analysis of drunk driving accidents in Michigan over the six years from 2018 to 2023. The study investigates the trends in crashes, injuries, fatalities, and property damage associated with alcohol-impaired driving, while also examining demographic factors such as age and gender. The findings are based on comprehensive data from Michigan Traffic Crash Facts (MTCF) and the National Highway Traffic Safety (NHTSA), accompanied by additional insights from the Michigan Department of State Police Office and reliable local sources.

The study reveals a marginal decline of 9.9% in the total number of drunk driving accidents, from 9,786 in 2018 to 8,817 in 2023. Despite this numerical reduction, alcohol-impaired accidents remain a significant and pervasive issue, causing 26.6% of all traffic crashes in Michigan in 2023. The trend analysis indicates fluctuating but consistently high levels of injuries and fatalities related to drunk driving. In 2023 alone, these accidents resulted in 3,678 injuries and 272 fatalities.

The demographic analysis highlights that young adults aged 25-34 accounted for 30% of all drunk driving incidents in 2023 which makes them the most at-risk age group. Male drivers were responsible for a disproportionately high number of accidents and fatalities compared to female drivers. However, female drivers contributed to a slightly higher number of injuries. This shows distinct behavioral and risk patterns across genders.

Our analysis also underlines a clear correlation between alcohol-impaired accidents and specific times of the day, particularly between midnight and 3 am, with peaks occurring during weekends and major holidays. Geographically, Wayne County reported the highest number of alcohol-impaired incidents, while rural counties such as Luce and Keweenaw showed the lowest numbers. This suggested a strong link between population density and accident frequency.

A comparative analysis of Michigan’s drunk driving fatalities with other states indicates that while Michigan’s overall percentage of alcohol-related traffic fatalities (28.58%) is relatively low, the state still ranks 14th in terms of total traffic fatalities.

The report concludes with a review of the resolutions adopted by the Michigan State Police. This includes maintaining a legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit of 0.08, deploying more police enforcement during peak seasons, and conducting extensive public awareness campaigns. Despite these efforts, the report emphasizes the need for ongoing and more aggressive measures to address the persistent prevalence of drunk driving and its serious consequences.

In essence, this research provides an inclusive understanding of the trends, demographics, and impact of drunk driving accidents in Michigan. It calls for heightened vigilance, legal reforms, and continuous public education to mitigate the human and economic costs of alcohol-impaired driving.

Key Findings

  • Injuries and Fatalities (2018-2023): Injuries from drunk driving dropped by 5.7% from 3,901 in 2018 to 3,678 in 2023. Fatalities decreased slightly from 287 in 2018 to 272 in 2023.
  • Drunk Driving Property Damage Crashes (2018-2023): Alcohol-impaired property damage crashes in Michigan experienced a steady decline from 5,598 in 2018 to 4,867 in 2023, with minor fluctuations during the last six-year period.
  • Percentage of Total Traffic Fatalities: Alcohol-impaired accidents accounted for 32% of all road accidents in 2018, but this percentage dropped to 27% by 2023.
  • Age Groups Most Affected: Drivers aged 25-34 contributed to 30% of all drunk driving accidents in 2023, followed by the 35-44 and 45-54 age groups.
  • Gender Comparison: Male drivers are responsible for significantly more accidents and fatalities than female drivers. In 2023, male drivers caused 6,062 alcohol-impaired accidents whereas female drivers caused 2,652 accidents.
  • Time-Based and Seasonal Patterns: Drunk driving accidents peaked between 12 am and 3 am and were most common on weekends and during major holidays.
  • County Analysis: Wayne County had the highest number of alcohol-impaired crashes (1360) in 2023, while counties with the lowest figures included Luce and Keweenaw (5-7 crashes each)
  • National Comparison: Michigan ranked 23rd among U.S. states for alcohol-related fatalities in 2022, with 301 deaths. It had a relatively low percentage of alcohol-impaired fatalities (28.58%).
  • Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC): The legal BAC limit in Michigan remains at 0.08. Higher BAC levels (e.g., 0.15 or more) are correlated with severe impairments and increased accident risks.

Introduction

It’s 2024, and yet people are getting severely injured, or are dying on the road due to drunk driving. According to recent studies, it was found that on average one person ends up dying every day due to drunk driving accidents in Michigan.

The most pathetic thing is the national death toll of drunk driving accidents is at least 37 people per day (NHTSA). Regardless of the number, every single life is valuable, and it’s totally unacceptable that someone’s careless behavior could lead to such tragic outcomes.

The most alarming thing about drunk driving is, it’s still pretty much out of control. Based on the studies conducted by Michigan Traffic Crash Facts, there have been 8,817 accidents in Michigan in 2023 due to drunk driving.

Although the number of drunk driving accidents has slightly reduced from 9,331 in 2022 to 8,817 in 2023, which is a 5% decrease, it’s still a significant number of accidents. It’s even more concerning that these accidents have taken 297 lives and have injured more than 3,678 people in Michigan alone in the year 2023.

About 26.6% of all road accidents are caused due to alcohol-related cases. Based on our trend analysis, the number of drunk driving accidents in Michigan hasn’t really changed much (MTCF 2022-23). In the last 5 years, the number of drunk driving accidents has decreased from 9,786 to 8,817. It may seem like a huge difference but is it really?

Many people are still getting injured or killed every day. And the numbers are a lot higher on a national level. More than 13,524 people have been killed throughout the USA due to alcohol-impaired accidents.

Regardless of the data presented here, there’s a lot more to address to understand the actual depth of drunk driving accidents in Michigan. So, this report comprehensively covers the problems associated with drunk driving, and drunk driving accidents trends in Michigan, and the entire country over the last 6 years (2018 to 2023).

The report also focuses on age groups, gender, seasonal and time-based drunk driving crashes, interpretations, correlation of accidents with blood alcohol level (BAC), consequences of drunk driving accidents, factors affecting the rate of drunk driving accidents, and resolutions taken by Michigan State to control these accidents.

Methodology

This quantitative analysis was mostly based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts (MTCF). Both of these sources provide comprehensive data on traffic accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers. We also looked at data from the Michigan Department of State Police Office, which gathers annual traffic reports and crash investigations.

In addition, a few pieces of information were acquired from other trustworthy news sources and local Michigan publications to augment official data and provide a full picture of the patterns. The data was evaluated for patterns throughout a five-year period, from 2018 to 2022, and possibly even 2023, depending on data availability and accessibility.

Note that while the study primarily uses data from reliable sources like MTCF, NHTSA, and Michigan state government reports, there may be slight inconsistencies in how data is collected and reported by different agencies. This can have a very marginal effect on the accuracy and comparability of results.

Drunk Driving Accident Trend in Michigan

To determine the trend of drunk driving accidents in Michigan, we have conducted thorough research to figure out the exact number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities. The main purpose of this report is to effectively illustrate how drunk driving accidents have progressed over the last 6 years.

Based on our overall trend analysis, the number of drunk driving accidents in Michigan has significantly decreased from 9,786 to 8,817 crashes. Numerically it seems like a drastic change, but it’s only a 9.90% decrease in the percentage of drunk driving accidents between 2018 and 2023.

Apparently, it’s not much of an improvement, which also means that accidents are still quite frequent, and it’s still pretty much the same. Here the most concerning aspect is whether the number of injuries and fatalities is increasing, decreasing or is it steady.

As of 2018, there have been reports of 3,901 injuries due to drunk driving accidents, and it has slightly reduced to 3,678 injuries in 2023, which is a 5.72% decrease in the last 6 years. Similarly, the number of fatalities has also decreased from 287 in 2018 to 272 in 2023, so this means that the percentage of fatalities has declined by 5.24%.

But here’s what’s even more alarming, and that is, there was a total of 905 traffic fatalities in Michigan in 2018. As there were 287 drunk driving accidents in 2018, this means 32% of all road accidents in Michigan are alcohol-impaired accidents. The interesting part is the total number of traffic accidents increased to 1,021 in 2023 with 272 drunk driving accidents.

Similarly, this means that in the year 2023, 27% of all traffic accidents were alcohol-impaired cases. Even here there’s a 5% decrease in the percentage of drunk driving fatalities. On that note, it is safe to admit that overall drunk driving accidents are in a declining trend from 2018 to 2023.

But that’s the overall statistics, it’s important to know the actual data figures in each of the following years to draw a more precise scenario. And, based on that we can truly determine what’s the actual condition of the drunk driving accident trend in Michigan.

So, in the following sections, we have presented the overall drunk driving statistics, age group, gender, seasonal and time-based patterns, county-wise drunk driving crashes, comparison with other states, and the national average.

Figure 1.1: Drunk Driving Crashes Trend (2018 to 2023)

There isn’t much change in the number of drunk driving crashes from 2018 to 2023. This means the number of crashes hasn’t changed much at all. The variation that we can see is also very negligible.

Although in the year 2020, there has been a notable drop in the number of drunk driving crashes, this could be due to the pandemic from 9,787 in 2019 to 9,078 in 2020. Again, it increased in 2021 possibly right after the pandemic lockdowns have been lifted, and the number of crashes sharply rose to 9,557.

Then it slightly declined in 2022, and 2023. Furthermore, the total traffic crashes also reflect a similar fluctuation from 2018 to 2023, and this also proves that the number of drunk driving trends is not stable.

Yes, it has declined on an overall 6-year comparison from 3.13% to 3.06% but it has increased from 3.11% to 3.70% between 2019 and 2020. And then it dropped from 3.38% to 3.18% between 2021 and 2022, after that it seems to be going in a declining trend as it decreased to 3.06% in 2023.

Figure 1.2: Drunk Driving Injuries Trend (2018 to 2023)

It’s quite unfortunate that the number of injuries is apparently on a rising trend with some minor fluctuations particularly in 2020, and 2023. Only in these two years, the number of drunk driving injuries slightly reduced by 3,731 and 3,678 respectively.

Although the total traffic injuries trend has been more on the declining spectrum. From 2018 to 2020 the total traffic injuries have significantly dropped from 55,340 to 44,417. But then it rapidly increased to 51,666 in 2021 and retained almost a steady figure in the next two years i.e. 51,066 in 2022, and 51,097 in 2023.

Based on the trend, alcohol-impaired injuries are actually increasing with some minor fluctuations. The rate of alcohol-related drunk driving accidents increased from 7.05% in 2018 to 8.40% in 2022. Then it slightly decreased to 7.42% in 2021 and again increased to 7.63% in 2022, and lastly, it slightly decreased to 7.20% in 2023.

So, this means that alcohol-impaired accidents leading to minor to severe but non-fatal injuries is in an increasing trend.

Figure 2.2: Percentage of Alcohol-Involved Fatalities (2023)

The number of fatalities due to drunk driving has been fluctuating quite inconsistently from 2018 to 2023. In 2018 the number of drunk driving fatalities was 287, and in 2019 it decreased to 266, but in 2020 it increased to 303. And then it increased to 336 in 2021 and then dropped to 272 fatalities in 2023.

Even the total traffic fatalities show a similar fluctuating trend, this means that both road accidents have increased in Michigan for alcohol and non-alcohol-involved cases. But the concerning fact is, the percentage of alcohol fatalities involved is quite high.

The percentage of alcohol fatalities from 2018 to 2022 has varied ranging from 32% to 29%. In 2023, there was a slight decrease of 2%, bringing the figure to 27% for fatalities caused by drunk driving.

Based on our comparative analysis the drunk driving property damage crashes have been the highest in 2018 which is 5,598. However, in the following years, it steadily followed a declining trend with a minor fluctuation in 2021

In the year 2020, the number of drunk driving property damage crashes was 5,044, and in 2021 it increased to 5,389. But again from 2022, it went back to a decreasing trend of 5,315 crashes followed up by 4,867 in 2023.

The interesting thing about the steadily decreasing trend in alcohol-impaired property damage is that the situation is relatively getting better. But it’s still quite high, but as the decreasing trend has been quite consistent, it is safe to expect that it will continue to decrease even further in the upcoming years.

Figure 2.3: Drunk Driving Accidents Trend by Age

The highest number of drunk driving accidents were caused by people aged between 25-34 years old. This age group is responsible for 30% of all drunk driving accidents which accounted for 2,260 alcohol-impaired accidents, and 17 fatalities in 2023.

Apart from young adults, the early middle-aged group ranging from 35-44 is the second highest contributor to drunk driving accidents in Michigan. They have a record of 21.30% of drunk driving accidents in Michigan with a total figure of 1,608 accidents, and 39 fatalities.

Next comes the typical middle-aged group ranging from 45–54-year-olds securing the third highest spot for causing the most drunk driving accidents in Michigan. Middle-aged drivers are responsible for causing 14.19% of drunken driving accidents in Michigan, which derives from 1,094 alcohol-impaired accidents and 26 fatalities.

However, there are two unique age groups i.e. 21 to 24, and 55 to 64 who have almost similar contributions to drunk driving accidents. The younger age group here has contributed to 12.33% of accidents which accounts for 931 crashes, whereas the older age group has contributed to 10.50% which accounts for 794 crashes.

Other age groups such as teenagers, elders, and senior citizens make a negligible contribution to drunk driving accidents. The main reason behind that is that teenagers can’t buy alcohol or drink it in bars. In Michigan, the legal age for buying, possessing, or drinking alcohol is at least 21. Also, most teenagers don’t earn enough to buy and consume alcohol frequently which also makes them less prone to drunk driving accidents.

Elder and senior citizens from the age of 65 to 80 are more mature, and responsible. Also, due to older age, it’s not physically possible for many senior citizens to drive or even visit bars, this makes them least prone to drunk driving accidents.

Figure 2.4: Drunk Driving Fatalities Trend by Gender (2023)

Evidently, male drivers have been involved in more drunk driving accidents than female drivers. Based on the data comparison between the years 2022 and 2023, male drivers have contributed to 6,589 crashes in the year 2022, whereas female drivers have been responsible for 2,642 alcohol-impaired accidents in the same year. Similarly, in 2023 male drivers have caused 6,062 accidents, and female drivers have caused 2,652 accidents.

Throughout the history of the United States, and Michigan itself, male drivers have always caused more accidents than female drivers. The main reason behind this is male drivers drive a lot more than female drivers. According to the Federal High Administration, the average annual mileage for male drivers is 16,550, and for female drivers, it is just 10,142.

It’s not just the number of crashes that’s important here, the main issue lies in the number of injuries and fatalities caused by both genders for drunk driving accidents. So, based on our research, female drivers have caused more injuries in drunk driving crashes compared to male drivers in both 2022, and 2023.

In the year 2022, female drivers were responsible for 36,113 injuries caused by drunk driving, whereas male drivers were involved in 34,120 injuries. Similarly in 2023, female drivers have caused 36,310 injuries compared to 34,709 injuries caused by male drivers.

On the other hand, the rate of injuries caused by male drivers is increasing faster than female drivers. Between the years 2022 to 2023, injuries caused by male drivers have increased by 1.70% whereas for female drivers it has increased by 0.5%.

The more concerning issue is male drivers are responsible for up to 2.6 times more fatalities than female drivers. In 2022, male drivers have killed 816 people in drunk driving accidents whereas female drivers were involved in 307 drunk driving fatalities. In 2023, male drivers have been responsible for 778 fatalities compared to 317 killings caused by female drivers.

Although the rate of fatalities caused by male drivers has decreased by 4.17%, the high number of killings is still severely alarming. Female drivers also have a significant number of fatalities but it’s still much lower than male drivers, even though it has increased by 3.30%.

Male drivers have more experience as they drive more on average, but at the same time, male drivers also have a long record of more reckless driving than female drivers. Based on our observation, two main reasons male drivers have a much higher number of fatalities is, that they drive more and are more prone to reckless driving.

Time-Based and Seasonal Patterns of Drunk Driving Accidents

Drunk driving accidents are most common at midnight, specifically from 12 am to 3 am, and tend to continue till 5 am in the morning. According to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts (2016-2020), the average number of crashes starts at 6.4% from 6 pm and reaches a peak of 8.9% at 2 am. Then it decreases to 1.9% at 5 am and goes down to 0.8% by 9 am and almost zero during the daytime.

Based on this study, and many others, it was found that people are more prone to drinking in the evening, and late at night, so the number of drunk driving accidents is usually much higher at night. As most drunk driving accidents happen at night here are 19 safety tips for driving at night.

Apart from the general timeframe, it’s very common for people to drink more during weekends. So, that’s why the number of alcohol-impaired accidents is highest on weekends. The average drunk driving crashes range from 9.5% to 15.5% on weekdays from Monday to Friday. However, on weekends, the percentage of alcohol-impaired accidents goes up to 42.6% with an average of 22.6% of accidents occurring on Saturday and 20.3% on Sunday.

Furthermore, drunk driving accidents tend to occur even more frequently during the holiday seasons like the Summer Holidays, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, Christmas, and New Year's Eve, among others. As people have more leisure time during the seasonal holidays, they tend to attend parties or visit bars. This leads to more impulsive drinking, and a rapid spike in alcohol-impaired crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
